In 1962 Walter Riml was engaged as the chief of the 2nd unit camerateam. The film was directed and produced by John Sturges. The screenplay was written by James Clavell. The team filmed on locations in the Bavaria Studios Munich, around Munich and on several locations in the Allgäu (Pfronten, Füssen, Schwangau, ect).
